Health
Behavior News Service
Welcome to the Health Behavior News Service, a resource for the news media and public to find the best and most recent evidence-based scientific research to help people make decisions about their health and health care.
HBNS monitors articles in peer-reviewed journals and research by nonprofit, public- and private-sector producers of systematic evidence reviews. We turn the research into readable, accurate and useful news stories on health promotion, disease prevention, chronic conditions and health care services.
Registration for this service is free, but limited to newspaper, magazine, broadcast, newsletter, freelance and Internet journalists.
On this site you will find links to stories we
have done on articles appearing in 30 peer-reviewed social science journals
since 1999; links to our popular "Facts of Life" monthly issue briefs; and a "Journalists Only" premium
area containing stories embargoed for release and tools for making better
use of evidence.
We are an independent, nonprofit program of the Center
for the Advancement of Health, which receives unrestricted funding from The
Annenberg Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Editorial control of the
news
service
is
solely
in
the
hands of the editor.
HBNS has been designated a "best practice for communication of science and technology to the public" by
the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the U.S. Department
of Energy."
News Stories
We issue embargoed news by e-mail, but we encourage you to bookmark and visit this site, both to keep up to date and to look for background material on long-term projects. By registering for access to the premium site or by receiving e-mailed stories, you agree to abide by the embargoes, namely that none of the information may be printed, posted or broadcast before the embargo time and date.
The Prepared Patient
The Prepared Patient, a series from the Health Behavior News Service, is intended
to help Americans participate more fully in their health care. Each month we
will explore a new topic to prepare readers for productive encounters with the
health care system: whether understanding the need for check-ups, to managing
their own chronic diseases, to getting the most value from doctor-patient interactions.
Health Behavior News Digest
Every weekday by 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, we produce the Health Behavior News Digest, linking you to the top stories in that morning's news media from around the world. The stories are on the latest evidence-based health research and on policy that affects how people make decisions about their own health care. We monitor news events daily to provide background information and interview ideas for breaking stories and to suggest newsworthy trends in health behavior for feature stories. We also alert journalists by e-mail when a previous study or evidence review might be of use in contextualizing a breaking story.
Expert Referrals
We refer journalists to experts who are part of a national network of scientists conducting the research that can lead to better health practices by consumers, physicians, employers and managed care organizations.
